Course Outline: |
Assisted reproductive techniques (ART) are challenging the ways in which biological parenthood is defined. Surrogacy is an arrangement where a surrogate mother bears and delivers a child for another couple or person. Medical advances have changed the mechanics of human reproduction, but the laws governing the issues raised by splitting and sharing the biological functions of parenthood are not keeping pace.
This seminar will look at the history of surrogacy, the impact of new permutations of ART, legislation and what the future holds for intended parents and the protection of children and surrogates. This seminar will also look at gestational and traditional surrogacy arrangements, commercial and altruistic, their legality and regulations in several jurisdictions and whether they are sufficient to meet the plethora of problems which inevitably occur when unforeseen circumstances arise. |
